5 End of Lease Cleaning Mistakes That Cost You Your Bond

Consumer Affairs Victoria data shows cleaning is the number one reason bond money gets withheld. Most disputes aren't about big things — they're about the small stuff tenants forget to check because they've lived with it for years.
1. Forgetting the oven
The oven is the single biggest cause of bond disputes. Property managers open it first. Baked-on carbon on the trays, glass door and grill needs proper degreaser, hot water and time — not a quick wipe the morning of the inspection.
2. Skipping the exhaust and rangehood filters
Grease-clogged filters are an instant flag. They need to come out, soak in hot soapy water, and go back looking silver — not orange.
3. Leaving marks on walls and skirting boards
Scuffs, blu-tack residue and cobwebs above door frames are everyday deductions. Spot-clean walls with a damp microfibre before you paint over anything.
4. Ignoring the wet areas
Silicone mould, soap scum on shower screens, calcium build-up on taps — property managers photograph all of it. A dedicated bathroom product and a scrub sponge saves you $150+.
5. Not booking carpet steam cleaning
Most Victorian leases require professional carpet cleaning at exit. A vacuum isn't enough. Book a certified steam clean and keep the receipt — it's often the single document that gets your bond back in full.
